Car hits pedestrians and bicyclists in New Orleans, killing two people

Authorities were still investigating the incident and gathering footage from security cameras, Ferguson said the suspect is being tested to determine whether he was intoxicated.

A New Orleans police report says Toney told officers: "I have a drinking problem".

Toney faces two counts of vehicular homicide, seven counts of vehicular negligent injury, hit and run, and reckless operation. Ferguson added that the suspect, who drove a black sports vehicle, said nothing at the scene.

The night of the crash was Toney's 32nd birthday, and police reportedly believe alcohol played a role when he ran into the group of people, a lot of them riding bikes.

New Orleans Police spokesman Andy Cunningham said in a news release that the fact that Toney's father is a member of the force will not impact the way the department handles its investigation.

The victims were a man and a woman both aged about 30, New Orleans emergency medical services said. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will release the victims' identities after autopsies are completed and family members notified.

EMS Director Emily Nichols told WVUE-TV that three of the five people brought to the hospital were in critical condition. Just two years ago a drunk driver drove into a crowd people of during Endymion's 2017 parade leaving more than 30 people injured.

The span of the scene could be seen from the wreckage left behind: A mangled bike was near Cabrini Park, on its side under a yellow traffic sign, with a bag of Mardi Gras beads beside it.

One onlooker, Dane Barrymore, told The New Orleans Advocate that he was smoking a cigarette outside a market when he saw a dark sports vehicle speeding down the street.

The incident happened not far from the Endymion parade, where one of the city's biggest Mardi Gras parades takes place.

"It just happened there were people there - bicyclists", Barrymore said.

One witness, cyclist Frank Rourk, told The New Orleans Advocate that he saw a driver of a dark sports vehicle spin out on the median.

"The first thing I saw was the man up there that got hit from behind", Lightfoot said.
