Top House Dems Request Documents from WH on Trump’s Communications With Putin

Chairman Jerrold Nadler says over 60 entities and individuals close to White House are getting document requests from House Judiciary Committee Monday

The demands, made by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., cover communications between former White House counsel Donald McGahn and the president relating to Trump's fired national security adviser, Michel Flynn, as well as Flynn's statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about contacts with former Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Among those targeted by the Democratic-led House Judiciary Committee are the president's sons Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump, WikiLeaks, White House aide and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, former US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former White House counsel Don McGahn.

Since taking power in the wake of November's midterm elections, House Democrats have vowed to investigate Trump's presidency and business as they await the special counsel Robert Mueller investigation's findings.

If those reports are true, Trump's actions "undermine the proper functioning of government", the lawmakers said in their letters, which were sent to Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The committee told reporters on Monday that the investigation will focus on three primary topics, according to NPR: "whether the president obstructed justice by interfering with criminal investigations; potential corruption such as violation of campaign and financial reporting laws, as well as possible misuse of office for personal gain; and abuses of power to include misuse of the pardon power and attacks on the press, judiciary and law enforcement agencies".

Republicans in Congress accuse Democrats of pursuing an impeachment agenda against Trump as part of a political strategy to reclaim the White House in the 2020 election. Nadler has asked the White House for "contents of meetings between President Trump and Vladimir Putin on July 7, 2017, November 11, 2017, July 16, 2018 and November 30, 2018".

Other demands for documents are directed to institutions including the White House, the Justice Department, the Trump campaign, the Trump transition team and the Trump Organization.

Trump fueled suspicions previous year about his ties with Russian Federation when, in a sharp break with standard diplomatic practice, he dismissed top aides for two hours of talks with Putin during their first formal summit, in Helsinki.

The Georgia congressman also accused Nadler of being pushed by anti-Trump elements in his party and in his district.

The oversight panel also has given the White House until Tuesday to respond to document requests surrounding its clearance process, some of which panel Democrats have been seeking for months.

"It's very clear that the president obstructed justice".

Several committees are probing related matters as well, and while many might overlap, the committee chairmen and chairwomen say they are working together on the investigations. He tried to protect [former national security advisor] Michael Flynn from being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In an email, he also noted how typical such requests are, while making sure to point out the atypical levels of crimes allegedly committed by Trump and others loyal to him.

Trump maintains that his campaign did not collude with Russian Federation and has repeatedly attacked the investigation on Twitter.
