Man Utd forward taken off against Southampton with knee injury

Victor Lindelof has nothing bad to say about Jose Mourinho

In a game of spectacular goals, Southampton wingback Yan Valery silenced Old Trafford by giving the Saints the lead with his ferocious strike in the 26th minute.

Having endured such a long run without a goal towards the end of past year, Lukaku's four strikes in a week mean he is now United's top Premier League goalscorer, and has staked a claim to be their central striker for the clash with Paris St-Germain in the Champions League in midweek.

And Solskjaer, who famously scored the injury-time victor in the 1999 Champions League final, felt there was an element of nostalgia to United's triumph.

Free-kick expert Ward-Prowse hit an outstanding strike to beat De Gea from distance and send the Saints fans wild.

But the forced introduction of Dalot proved significant with the young Portuguese defender, forced into midfield, sending over a right-wing cross with his very first touch which Rashford headed just wide.

Goals from Andreas Pereira and Lukaku then turned the game on its head.

And United were ahead just before the hour mark when Lukaku slotted an effort into the bottom corner, having been played in by Pereira.

"The guys are very, very disappointed after the game and I think that they put everything on the pitch that was possible today and showed a fantastic performance".

'We maybe could have had two penalties and at 2-0 up it would be much more hard for Man United, ' Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuettl said.

There was still time for United's Paul Pogba to have a penalty saved by Angus Gunn in injury time after Marcus Rashford was fouled.

The United forward was hurt in a challenge early in the second half and was seen limping out of Old Trafford seemingly wearing strapping on his right leg.

Valery and Vestergaard tried their luck as the visitors pushed for a victor that would come at the other end two minutes from time.

"The belief is there, they have gone so long without losing games [domestically] and are raring to go". They want to get on the ball and the confidence is high.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men trailing 1-0 early in the second half, the Chile worldwide appeared to hurt his knee in a collision with Jan Bednarek in the Saints box. "It's like every manager doesn't like to lose and we had a big chance but it was not enough".

Romelu Lukaku has perhaps rightly received a huge amount of criticism during his spell at Manchester United but there is no doubt that the Belgian forward is a goalscorer.
