Once declared too radical by Democratic leaders, the policies pushed by Bernie Sanders including universal health care have tilted toward mainstream party acceptance, themes he and several rival progressives will uphold on the USA presidential campaign trail.
But after reportedly workshopping names for the current crop of Democratshoping to defeat him in the 2020 election, the president has apparently settled on a nickname he's used before for the one candidate who almost squared off against him in 2016: Sen.
Sanders has been ranked among the leaders in opinion polls of prospective 2020 candidates, but he faces challenges from a large pool of other progressives who advocate for numerous same issues that he brought into the party's mainstream.
If Mr Sanders is successful in securing the nomination, he will become the oldest presidential candidate in USA history. "The American people will reject an agenda of sky-high tax rates, government-run health care and coddling dictators like those in Venezuela", she said.
"I'm running for president because we need to make policy decisions based on science, not politics".
In 2016, Sanders notably struggled to garner support from black voters, an issue that could become particularly pervasive during a primary race that could include several non-white candidates.
Trump's use of the "Crazy Bernie" nickname dates back to the 2016 Democratic primary when Trump would seemingly encourage Sanders as a more subtle way of attacking the Democratic front-runner, Clinton.
Sen. Sanders (I-Vermont) is joining Harris, Klobuchar, Sen.
"The timing of a socialist declaring for president one day after the president of the United States condemned socialism in Miami".
"Socialism has so completely ravaged this great country that even the world's largest reserves of oil are no longer enough to keep the lights on".
"I tend to think let them keep digging themselves into a hole because the average American sees how insane these ideas are, and how quickly this would bankrupt our country and lead us down a path much like where Venezuela is now".
Sanders served in the House until 2006 when he was elected to the US Senate. "His argument now is not the message; it's, 'I'm the best person to deliver the message.'" In its launch video, the Sanders campaign emphasises how the progressive policies others tout started with him.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump dismissed Sanders' chances but said at least the senator, like Trump, has been tough on free-trade deals.
Parkhomenko was blasted for the tweet, with some saying it was unbelievable that he seemed to learn no lessons from Clinton's loss four years ago, but the political operator doubled down, claiming there were "unanswered questions" about Sanders - without clarifying exactly what he meant.
Jussie Smollett Case Takes a New Turn
The news agency said it's unclear if the brothers have testified but they are expected to do so eventually. As a result, Smollett will only be working one, maybe two, days this week instead of every day like before.
