Measles outbreak in Philippines could bring disease to Guam

Clamour for vaccines as measles outbreak kills nearly 1,000 children in Madagascar

Calls to get vaccinated in the Interior have gone up since the measles outbreak in Vancouver and Washington. All school-age children and adults born in 1970 or later should have two doses of the MMR vaccine for full protection, according to Island Health. Unless an exemption is claimed, a child is required to be vaccinated against or show proof of acquired immunity for almost a dozen diseases - including polio, whooping cough and mumps - before they can attend school or a child care center. "Others had been hesitant [to be inoculated] because of pressure from peer groups".

"As you know, measles is endemic in other parts of the world, and people travel", said Mema.

"People should get vaccinated". I am most excited about development of vaccines to prevent infectious diseases for which there are now high levels of antibiotic resistance, such as MRSA [Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus] and vaccines preventing disease in young infants by vaccinating pregnant women.

Among the patients Cadesky inoculated is Maddi Bisset, who had no vaccinations as a child because her mother believed young children shouldn't be "pumped full of chemicals".

"Like many countries in the region of the Americas, however, due to increasing numbers of refusals of vaccines and declining national coverage in vaccines, including the MMR vaccine, the risk of transmission of this preventable illness is increasing", the ministry statement continued.

"Everything my mother did was with our best interests in mind".

Last week, Vancouver Coastal Health confirmed eight new cases of the measles affecting students at two of the city's francophone public schools.

Hayden said the vaccination rates at both schools is quite high, hovering around 95 per cent. Measles infection typically causes a rash, fever, conjunctivitis (red eyes), cough or runny nose. People are contagious for about five days before symptoms develop and then it presents like a flu before it develops into a rash.

When an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, the virus spreads through the air and can survive in small droplets in the air for several hours.

The most recent statistics from AHS are from 2017 and indicate that 87 per cent of children in Alberta had received their first measles vaccine by the age of two and 79 per cent had received their second shot by the age of seven.

On Tuesday, the health authority said at least 36 students and staff members from the three schools affected are now not attending classes because the students are either not vaccinated or don't have proof of vaccination. Others at risk are those who choose not to be immunized, often based on a long-discredited 1998 United Kingdom study that suggested the MMR vaccine was linked to autism in children. For them, we keep saying the messages that we say: that vaccines are safe and effective.

Bisset agreed, saying her friends are all vaccinated and are pro-immunization.

If you think you have contracted measles, be sure to alert your doctor before you go for a checkup, so they can quickly get to you.

Even more concerning is the drastic increase in the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) from 0.93% on 31 December 2018, to 2% on 7 February 2019.
