Jodi Wilson-Raybould

Currently Wilson-Raybould is at the center of a political scandal involving allegation that the Prime Minister's Office attempted to interfere with the justice system in favor of Montreal construction giant SNC-Lavalin.

First Nations leaders in B.C. characterized Wilson-Raybould's recent demotion from the Justice Department to Veterans Affairs and her treatment by the Liberals as disappointing and a stab in the back.

"I think that Liberal MPs like most Canadians want to make sure the country is comfortable in knowing that what the prime minister has said is true..."

This meeting is taking place in the shadow of Wilson-Raybould's high-profile resignation from the federal cabinet on Tuesday.

The allegation in the Globe story is that Trudeau's officials pressured Wilson-Raybould a year ago to make use of the power the law gave her and allow SNC-Lavalin to negotiate a plea bargain.

"We urge Mr. Trudeau's team to stop trying to discredit Ms. Wilson-Raybould and to commit to fully cooperate with the Ethic Commissioner's investigation". He told reporters in Vancouver that he had full confidence in Wilson-Raybould and that her continued presence in cabinet "should actually speak for itself".

Commissioner Mario Dion's office announced on Monday that he has launched an investigation in the case because he has "reason to believe that a possible contravention" of the Conflict of Interest Act has occurred, specifically regarding a public office holder seeking to improperly influence a decision of another person.

The Globe and Mail newspaper had reported last week that the Prime Minister's office pressured her to arrange a deal with SNC-Lavalin that would have let it avoid criminal prosecution on allegations of corruption and bribery in relation to its efforts to win government contracts in Libya.

Government insiders have said Wilson-Raybould was involved in internal discussions last fall about whether to instruct the director of public prosecutions to pursue remediation, as is allowed by law, but they've insisted those discussions were not tantamount to pressure.

While the controversy snowballed, Ms Wilson-Raybould declined to speak, citing solicitor-client privilege and cabinet confidentiality.

"Our government did its job properly and according to all the rules", he said, while upbraiding his former attorney general, if she felt otherwise, for not bringing her concerns to him directly.

The latest news out of Ottawa today is that Canada's former Attorney General, Jody Wilson-Raybould has officially resigned amid the major SNC-Lavalin Scandal.

"What happened to me was a real tell-tale sign of how Trudeau's government is operating". She goes on to thank Canadians who have supported her during her time in the federal cabinet and states she will remain as MP for Vancouver-Granville.

Her resignation provides stark contrast to Trudeau's characterization of the situation just a day earlier. She was the flawless fit for his new cabinet.

Perry Bellegarde, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, said in a statement that he was "saddened" by Wilson-Raybould's departure, noting that many First Nations people celebrated her appointment to the justice portfolio as a "testament to her expertise, experience and intellect". "It doesn't help them that Wilson-Raybould's father (influential First Nations leader Bill Wilson) is calling them out on that failure".

On Wednesday, the House Of Commons justice committee will meet to discuss a separate request to call nine witnesses, including Wilson-Raybould, to testify over the claims of political interference.
