Kendrick Lamar, Drake and Childish Gambino reportedly turned down the Grammys

Kendrick Lamar Drake and Childish Gambino

The New York Times spoke to show producer Ken Ehrlich about repeated rejections they received and he pointed to the rather large elephant that has been dwelling the in that room for years.

"The fact of the matter is, we continue to have a problem in the hip-hop world", Ehrlich said. "When they don't take home the big prize, the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad", Ehrlich told the Times.

Lamar leads with eight nominations this year, followed by Drake with seven. Janelle Monae's "Dirty Computer", country singer Kacey Musgraves' "Golden Hour", eclectic musician Brandi Carlile's "By The Way, I Forgive You", newcomer H.E.R's self-titled "H.E.R.", and the soundtrack album to superhero movie "Black Panther", which was produced by Lamar, round out the contenders for best album. Childish Gambino himself received four nominations, however, there are now nod details if any of the three will be in attendance at all. Fans have often wondered how Lamar could win a Pulitzer for his rap but lose a Grammy to the more pop centric Bruno Mars.

Their absence is seen as a snub by the three rappers for an awards show that has shut hip-hop artists out of its top prizes for a decade, despite rap's dominance as the biggest music genre in the United States. "Because I think they would be welcomed". According to the show's producer, he is one of three hip-hop artists who turned down performance slots.

Despite the Recording Academy's efforts, it is unclear if some artists will even show up to the Grammys this year. Or Jay-Z, who was up for eight awards but went home without a single win.

Taylor Swift, who has just one nod for her best-selling 2017 album "Reputation", is filming in London.

The GRAMMYs seem to have an issue with performers this year, yesterday Ariana Grande pulled out of the show due to creative differences.

The Grammys will hold on Sunday, February 10 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

CNN has reached out to the Recording Academy for additional comment.
