US officials visiting Mideast to seek backing for peace plan

White House officials set to rally support for Middle East peace plan

The top U.S. officials will share details of the economic portion of their peace plan with several wealthy Arab countries as they look to secure financial support for the economic plan, which is created to boost the Palestinian economy if Israelis and Palestinians reach a political settlement.

Earlier in the day, Palestinians blasted a US-led conference on the Middle-East set to take place in Warsaw, Poland, next week.

Prior to Warsaw, Kushner will travel with USA peace envoy Jason Greenblatt to Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, to discuss the economic part of the plan, according to Israeli media.

Jared Kushner, the United States President's son-in-law and senior adviser, will visit the Middle East at the end of February, along with the US President's special envoy to the region, Jason Greenblatt, to discuss the economic aspects of Donald Trump's peace plan, "Deal of the Century".

"Their [the Arab countries] support, I'm sure in some manner, will be conditioned on whether they are comfortable with the political plan", the official said. "The economic plan only works if the region supports it", said one official who briefed a small group of reporters. "This is a very important part of the overall equation".

Officials said they realized that the Arab diplomats Kushner meets will want to know elements of the political component before rendering a judgment on the economic plan.

Trump has long promised to try and reach the so-called "deal of the century" to end the long-simmering Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but his efforts have derailed since his decision to transfer the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.

The Palestinians have refused to meet with the United States to discuss peace overtures since December 2017, when Trump announced the move and declared he would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The Palestinian foreign ministry also criticised Trump for hailed the USA embassy move in his State of the Union address Tuesday.

According to rumors, the new peace plan includes handing the new PA government-whether as a fully realized state or something less than that-the eastern part of Jerusalem to be turned into its future capital.

"We hope Abbas reads the plan, judges it on its merits and comes to the table for negotiations after we release the plan".
