Measles cases in Europe highest in decade

Oregon measles cases rises to 4 as Vancouver-area reaches 50

The virus spreads through the air and can linger for up to two hours in an isolated space.

This, the HSE says, is why measles outbreaks are occurring in Ireland and across Europe.

Vaccination rates for measles, mumps and rubella in Ukraine fell sharply over a number of years during its conflict with Russian Federation, reaching 31% in 2016 - among the lowest in the world.

Denton County Public Health officials said Wednesday there's one confirmed case of measles in the county. Among the confirmed cases, 43 were not immunized against the highly contagious disease. That is almost a 500 percent jump in orders from January a year ago, when the total was just 530. Severe complications include pneumonia, which can be fatal, and encephalitis (swelling of the brain), which can lead to convulsions, hearing loss, and intellectual disabilities in children.

There were 72 deaths from measles in Europe in 2018 compared with 42 in 2017.

The measles outbreak in the Pacific northwest is worsening: 51 confirmed and nine suspected cases.

A total of 72 children and adults died in 2018 following infection, the World Health Organization said. In Washington state, permissive vaccination rules are being blamed for the outbreak.

As the threat of measles has become all too real in Clark County, residents are lining up for vaccines, according to data first reported by Kaiser Health News.

The WHO says the 2018 surge in measles cases followed a year when European countries achieved their highest ever estimated coverage for the second dose of the measles vaccination - 90%. The outbreak in Clark County has been concentrated mostly among unvaccinated children.

Measles cases are surfacing across the country as an outbreak tied to the highly contagious viral infection continues to spread. Concern over the vaccine can be traced back to a 1998 paper by former doctor Andrew Wakefield, who falsely linked the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to autism.

Children can be vaccinated once they are 12 months old.

The best way to prevent measles infection is with 2 doses of the MMR vaccine.

Multnomah County officials have reported a steep uptick in vaccinations over this time past year.

But it's a snapshot of the scare an outbreak can cause, said Dr. Alan Melnick, the Clark County health officer overseeing the response.
