Cleveland Cavaliers make three-way trade with Houston, Sacramento

HardenBryant- Cropped

The former North Carolina standout grew up in Houston and has appeared in 120 career National Basketball Association games (44 starts) since the Kings selected him with the No. 15 overall pick in 2017.

Iman Shumpert is headed to Houston after the Rockets made a significant cost-cutting move, including a lottery-protected 2019 first round pick to unload the contracts of Brandon Knight and Marquese Chriss.

The Cavaliers will also send Nik Stauskas and Wade Baldwin to the Rockets in the three-way deal. The Cavs send Alec Burks and a second round pick to the Kings and the Kings send Shumpert to Houston.

The Rockets have been in search of a wing player for the better part of the season.

The deal was apparently built off the foundation of a previously reported Knight/first-round-pick-for-Burks discussion. That means the Hawks will only receive a pair of second-round picks in exchange for Korver.

"Knight is due $15.6 million next season, which would give the Cavs another hefty expiring contract next year to perhaps flip again", Lloyd wrote.

The Rockets and Cavaliers were discussing a potential Burks trade for quite some time. However, the 27-year-old Knight had been a major disappointment for the Rockets, appearing in just 12 games and averaging just under 10 minutes per game this season. He signed as a free agent with the Trail Blazers on July 5 last summer.

As The Athletic's Jason Lloyd wrote before the deadline, a Burks trade wasn't going to be popular in the Cavaliers locker room, as many of his teammates hoped he'd remain in Cleveland long term.
