SpongeBob Squarepants finally gets Sweet Victory after Super Bowl

Adam Levine Super Bowl

Sure, most of these artists were past their primes, played their sets like they've done hundreds of times before and were pretty much forgotten by all but their most loyal fans the next morning. But at least their dozen minutes in the spotlight were familiar and safe, and generally gave viewers something inoffensive to watch and listen to between nacho bites. "As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show". Justin Timberlake headlined the show a year ago with minimal fuss (aside from references to his "Nipplegate" involvement), and in 2017 Lady Gaga was the main attraction.

Turns out the Super Bowl is a day of giving. While the band went through many of their hits from their earlier years into the newer ones for younger fans, the performance felt a little too much like an echo of everything we've seen from them in the past. And honestly, I barely remember what Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen played.

The 2004 incident was dubbed "Nipplegate" by the media and left Jackson and Timberlake forced to issue apologies while CBS - the network that aired the Super Bowl performance that year - was punished by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with a hefty fine of US$550,000 (RM 2.25 million) for indecency.

Adam later explained their decision in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying: "My life's work and what I put out into the universe has been positive and hopefully inspiring ..." I find Kendrick Lamar way more interesting than the Stones, the Who and Neil Young these days.

Whilst some may not be avid sports fans, many will have tuned in to watch the Super Bowl Halftime Show to see what awesome moves were on offer from this year's act. A crowd of conveniently cheerful extras thronged the stage for some of Maroon 5's pleasingly competent power pop. During the latter song, lantern drones in the sky spelled out the words "One Love".

They're just that sorta band.

"We thank our fans for making our dreams possible and we thank our critics for always pushing us to do better". But according to a lengthy message posted to Instagram, Levine seemed content about their performance. Not even SpongeBob SquarePants' appearance could save it.

Cardi B was also approached to perform, but turned down the offer to "stand behind" former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
