U.S. wants Russian Federation out to take control of Venezuelan oil

Washington has recognized Guaido's claim to lead Venezuela, but hard-left President Nicolas Maduro, who still controls the military and police, says Guaido is part of a USA -led coup plot.

The 35-year-old opposition lawmaker, who is president of the National Assembly, says Maduro fraudulently won a second term last year and is offering an amnesty to military officials.

Venezuela's government struck back at self-declared interim president Juan Guaido on Tuesday, with the Supreme Court imposing a travel ban and freeze on his bank accounts despite a warning from Washington of "serious consequences" if it did so. Many opposition leaders have been imprisoned in the South American nation.

Not many believe the Venezuelan factor will be a big deal for oil prices. The country sends 41 per cent of its oil exports to the U.S. Critically, U.S. refiners are among the few customers that pay cash to Venezuela for its oil.

Bloomberg's source did not specify the ultimate destination for all of those gold bars, but they certainly will not be going to the Bank of England, which last week heeded the advice of US officials and denied Maduro's request to withdraw $1.2 billion of the Venezuelan gold it has been holding. "We must take to the street".

Guaido is now petitioning the Bank of England to prevent Mr Maduro getting his hands on $1.3 billion (£1 billion) in gold held in London vaults.

Juan Guaido (centre), the head of the Venezuelan National Assembly, speaks to the press in Caracas on Tuesday.

Venezuela's opposition party, which has launched a coup against the country's incumbent leader, said information had been received from the Bank of Venezuela that a plane from Russian Federation had arrived to Caracas to "extract at least 20 tons of gold", which amounts to 20 percent of the bank's holdings.

"I am sure that if we meet and talk, there will be a completely different story", Maduro said, adding that such a meeting, however, is unlikely to happen because Trump's team will do everything to prevent it.

"It would be very good to conduct parliamentary elections at an earlier stage".

Although in opposition hands since 2015, parliament has been sidelined since 2016 as the regime-loyalist dominated Supreme Court annuls its every decision.

The previously little-known Guaido has re-invigorated the opposition movement by pushing for three immediate goals: to end Maduro's "usurpation" of power, establish a transitional government, and hold a new presidential election.

Several opposition leaders were unable to stand due to being imprisoned, exiled or barred, leading to a boycott from their parties. "The politically unpredictable situation that develops in Venezuela imposes an imprint on the relations between the companies", he said.

"Once more we'll come out victorious", Maduro, dressed in a green cap and shirt, said January 29 while standing before rows of troops. "The regime is in its final throes", said Guaido.

The White House has refused to rule out military action in the region, with Donald Trump's National Security Advisor John Bolton even photographed on Monday holding a notepad with the handwritten line: "5,000 troops to Colombia".

"Donald Trump has without doubt given an order to kill me and has told the government of Colombia and the Colombian mafia to kill me", Maduro said, reprising a constant accusation of his and Chavez's over the years.
