The yellow weather warning is in force from 12 noon on Tuesday until 11am on Wednesday.

Temperatures in South Tyneside are not due to rise above 4°C but throughout the day it may feel as cold as -4°C.

The Met Office said there was a "slight chance" that some rural communities could be cut off and a "small chance" that power cuts may occur and mobile phone coverage could be affected.

Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing later on Tuesday afternoon, which will result in ice forming on untreated surfaces.

Over the coming days, Met Eireann says temperatures could fall as low as minus three degrees, with some accumulations of snow expected in areas.

Met Office forecaster Ellie Creed added: "I think you could well find it's somewhere between -5 and -7C over the Scottish glens".

Heavy snow is forecast to hit the United Kingdom tonight as the Big Freeze launches another bone-chilling assault on the country.

"For higher ground in Wales and northern-England could see the higher totals of 9-10cm by Thursday morning".

On Monday morning, ice and snow made driving conditions hazardous across the northeast of Scotland.

THE Met office has warned motorists they could become stranded with snow -'possibly heavy at times' - expected to fall tonight and tomorrow.

"Further snow showers overnight, mainly affecting western hills, with mostly sunny skies across remaining areas".

Police Scotland urged drivers to "exercise extra caution" and check for updates online.

"A patchy covering of one to two centimetres is possible at low levels, although some places will see no snow at all".
