DOJ's Matthew Whitaker: Mueller Probe May Be 'Close to Being Completed'

Robert Mueller investigation is 'close to being completed,' acting attorney general says

He said he had been "fully briefed" on the probe.

Whitaker was asked directly if, in light of his previous criticism of the Special Counsel, he'd seen anything once he became acting AG and began receiving briefings that gave him pause about Mueller or his investigation.

Stone has proclaimed his innocence and said he would fight the charges, but several other Trump associates indicted by Mueller have pleaded guilty to various charges. But he has yet to accuse anyone close to the Trump campaign of conspiring with the Kremlin to hurt Democrat Hillary Clinton and help Trump win the election.

Whitaker has drawn criticism over his decision not to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation even though a top Justice Department ethics official advised him to step aside out of an "abundance of caution".

While there had been reports in the past that Mueller could be finishing up-with a report possibly coming as soon as February-this was the first time anyone with actual knowledge of the investigation had gone on record with a status update like this.

But it's unclear what form the report will take or whether it will be released publicly. Reports have suggested that Mueller was in the process of writing a final report.

Barr's written comments were made in response to questions posed by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which on Tuesday is due to vote on whether to endorse his nomination and send it to the full U.S. Senate for a confirmation vote.

Roger Stone was indicted for allegedly obstructing Robert Mueller's probe into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation before the 2016 USA election. On Friday, Roger Stone, 66, a veteran Republican operative and longtime Trump adviser, was arrested at his Florida home by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents on charges of making false statements to Congress and witness tampering.

Whitaker's remarks came just days after Special Counsel Robert Mueller ordered the dramatic predawn arrest of former Trump adviser Roger Stone on charges he allegedly lied to Congress and directed another witness to do the same.
