'Venezuela to survive this coup attempt,' says Maduro

Venezuela Abandons Demand That U.S. Diplomats Leave

"Seventy-four years ago, the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated, and today, just as our country is also fighting for its freedom, we thank the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu for the recognition and the support", Guaido tweeted.

Guaido's bid was swiftly endorsed by Canada, the United States and many Latin American countries.

"Venezuelan soldier, I'm talking to you".

Venezuela has sunk into turmoil under President Nicolas Maduro, with ongoing food shortages and daily protests amid an economic and political crisis.

In the interview with CNN Turk, Maduro accused the USA of mounting a coup attempt against him - a regular refrain - and insisted Guaido was "violating the constitution".

Mr Maduro is still clinging to power and continues to have the support of the military at this stage.

Guaido took advantage of a major street demonstration on January 23 to swear himself in as the country's rightful leader, accusing Maduro of usurping power following a disputed 2018 re-election that countries around the world described as a fraud.

Washington also accepted exiled opposition leader Carlos Vecchio as Venezuela's new charge d'affaires to the United States after he was tapped by Guaido.

The caution came after Spain, Britain, France, the Netherlands and Germany said Saturday they would recognize Guaido as interim president unless Maduro calls elections within eight days.

Recalling last year's presidential elections in his country, Maduro said he won the election with 65 percent of votes, and the parliamentary elections were going to be held in 2020.

The US now considers Juan Guaido to be Venezuela's interim leader-and any "violence or intimidation" against him, or against American diplomats, will be met with a "significant response", John Bolton warned Sunday.

Maduro has received support from Russia, Syria, Turkey and China as well as longtime allies Cuba and Bolivia.

Some 29 people have been killed and more than 350 people have been detained in clashes this week between anti-Maduro activists and security forces.

Although he professed himself "open to dialogue", he acknowledged it was unlikely.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida publicly welcomed the decision, and praised the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump for taking action.

"Either you stand with the forces of freedom or you're in league with Maduro and his mayhem", the USA secretary of state told the United Nations security council.

Colonel Jose Luis Silva Silva, Venezuela's top military diplomat in the USA, said in a video widely circulated on social media Saturday that he supports Guaido. The U.S. imported less than 500,000 barrels a day of Venezuelan crude and petroleum products in 2017, down from more than 1.2 million barrels a day in 2008, according to the Energy Information Administration. He said he also wanted his own diplomats "to defend Venezuelan interests in the U.S." comparing the arrangement to that of the US and Cuba, which had no diplomatic relations but maintained ties through lower-level officials in each country.
