Muslim community targeted in foiled attack wants justice

4 arrested in plot to attack Muslim community in New York

According to court papers, the suspects are accused of having multiple cylinder-shaped explosive devices or IEDs and Mason jars wrapped in duct tape.

After conducting the investigation, police discovered a plot to attack the Muslim community of Islamberg, New York.

Three men in Greece, two of whom are Eagle Scouts, are under arrest after police say they planned to attack an Islamic community outside of Binghamton. Authorities later said they seized 23 weapons and three improvised explosive devices while carrying out search warrants.

In this September 7, 2017 photo, a girl studies for school while a man chops wood in the Muslim enclave of Islamberg in Tompkins, N.Y. Followers of Pakistani cleric Sheikh Mubarik Gilani settled Islamberg in the 1980s, fleeing crime and crowding in New York City. A student told security, and an investigation was launched into both the 16-year-old who showed off the image and the boy pictured.

They were found in the 16-year-old's home, a police officer added.

Police also arrested and charged a 16-year-old boy in connection to the plot and under a new law are trying him as an adolescent.

The three adults arrested were 20-year-old Brian Colaneri, 18-year-old Andrew Crysel and 19-year-old Vincent Vetromile. Investigators said they had access to 23 rifles and shotguns. The devices are being analyzed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at a lab in Quantico, Virginia, Phelan said.

"If they had carried out this plot - and there's every indication that they were going to - people would have died".

Prosecutors say federal charges are also likely. "I don't know how many and who, but people would have died".

During the 1980s, the Pakistani cleric urged his American followers to leave metropolitan areas and establish rural communities centred on religious life.

The rural community in Delaware County is operated by The Muslims of America, an indigenous American Muslim organized based in the U.S., which runs 21 others in North America.

Over the past several years, Islamberg has been attacked by anti-Muslim groups and some right-wing conspiracy theorists, who have said the town is actually a terrorist training camp despite its peaceful history.

In March 2015, authorities arrested a Tennessee man named Robert Doggart for plotting an Islamophobic attack on the compound.
