Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross announcedthis year's Academy Awards nominations bright and early on Tuesday morning, and although many nods seemed like a foregone conclusion - like the domination of Roma, the love for the ladies of The Favourite, the inevitable song nomination for A Star Is Born's "Shallow" - others came as a surprise.
"Roma" received 10 Academy Award nominations in total, tying "The Favourite" as the year's most-nominated film.
Defying history, Ryan Coogler helmed Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman becomes the first superhero film to earn a Best Picture nomination at Oscars 2019. In 2014, "12 Years A Slave" director Steve McQueen took home the award for best picture, but not best director. The Favourite, Vice, Green Book and Black Panther all have a solid chance at landing multiple nominations as well in a very competitive year. Hulu may have only gotten one nomination, but it was the nomination they were hoping for: a Best Documentary Feature for their excellent Minding the Gap. An Oscar win would burnish Netflix's credibility as a go-to place for top-tier original films. The Mexican-born director earned nods for direction, cinematography, original screenplay and best picture. While Netflix is known for prestige series like The Queen or Orange is the New Black, the streaming service has had a more mixed run with films.
Cuarón gave an impassioned defense of Netflix after being asked in the Golden Globes press room about the streamer - which does screen some of its films in theaters before or in conjunction with release on its platform - being seen as the so-called death of traditional independent cinema. With three rather unexpected nominations, the Coen brothers' anthology western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs had a great morning.
The nominees for best supporting actress are Amy Adams ("Vice"), Marina De Tavira ("Roma"), Regina King ("If Beale Street Could Talk"), Emma Stone ("The Favourite") and Rachel Weisz ("The Favourite"). As much as I like Claire Foy, I will not call this a "snub" because one, the competition was STACKED so inevitably SOMEONE wasn't getting in, and two, I'm not bothered if the Academy is finally over its Stressed Wife obsession. I expected it to compete in the craft categories despite losing momentum as an overall leading contender, though I am surprised it didn't get a score nomination. Though the bleak film won statues for best actor and best original screenplay, it didn't cinch the best picture title - leaving the crown for first streamer to actually win a best picture Oscar unclaimed. She remains the only black woman to receive the honor.
While B-Coop was acknowledged for playing the alcoholic rock star in his remake of A Star Is Born, his directing talents were unrecognized.
