Microsoft set to end Windows 10 Mobile updates and support

Microsoft No Longer Sees Cortana as a Competitor to Alexa or Google Assistant

The last round of smartphones for the platform were released in the early fall of 2017, and according to recent estimates the Windows Phone market share checks in at less than 0.5 per cent.

The latest version of Windows 10 Mobile was released in October 2017. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) also reportedly scrapped as many as 36,000 Windows phones and replaced them with iPhones after previous acknowledgment that Microsoft mobile support would be ending.

The forerunning Windows Mobile software was poor and lagged way behind the emerging iOS and Android for around three years after the iPhone launched in 2007.

The document in question is actually an FAQ in which Microsoft answers a slew of questions related to the End of Support for Windows 10 Mobile. The automatic or manual creation of new device backups for settings and some applications will continue for 3 months after December 10.

The end of support applies to all the Microsoft and Lumia devices. The company is officially recommending its Windows 10 Mobile users to move to Android and iOS. However, end of support means that no more free security patches will be arriving from Microsoft. A slight change to the Win 10 phone support page was first detected by Thurrott, a website that also covers Microsoft. These security updates will now cease on December 10th 2019, and devices will be unsupported after this date. Microsoft specifically asks what "you want Windows to do (or stop doing)" while gaming, what optimisations you want Windows to implement, and what "other gaming features" you'd like to see.

Microsoft suggests that customers switch to devices running the Android or iOS operating systems (and use Microsoft apps on these devices).

Are any of our readers still rocking a Windows device?

Similarly, Microsoft may be realizing that it can't continue to compete with other technology juggernauts on all fronts. Both an iOS and Android version of Outlook exists, along with an iOS and Android version of OneDrive. Microsoft states that it has no plans to "remove historical Windows 10 Mobile updates from Windows Update".
