The Israeli prime minister is facing a 9 April election and has been looking to burnish his security credentials - despite several ongoing corruption cases involving him and his family. That possibility appeared reinforced by figures he gave on Sunday that went beyond more measured information previously provided by other officials.
The United States has said repeatedly that it will continue to support Israel's right to defend itself against Iran and Hezbollah, including through targeted strikes in Syria, in the wake of its decision to remove American forces from the country.
Only a warehouse in the Damascus International Airport was damaged, according to the statement.
"Just in the last 36 hours did the [Israel Air Force] attack Iranian warehouses with Iranian weapons at the global airport in Damascus", the premier said.
Al Arabiya quoted the Syrian state news agency SANA as stating that one of the airport warehouses was hit during the attack. While they have at times traded blows within Syria and the occupied Golan Heights, the Israel-Lebanon border has mostly been quiet. Israel's outgoing military chief, Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot, did so over the weekend in various interviews.
Netanyahu also cited an Israeli search-and-dismantle mission against suspected Hezbollah attack tunnels along the border with Lebanon that was launched in December and deemed completed on Sunday.
It reached a few dozen metres into Israel, and at 55 metres under the ground was the deepest as well as "the longest and most detailed" of all the tunnels the army exposed, Conricus said.
He also reiterated that Israel holds the Lebanese government accountable "for any act of violence or violation of 1701", the United Nations resolution that ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.
The powerful Shiite Hezbollah group, which acts independently in Lebanon, has yet to comment on the tunnels.
A month-long war in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah killed more than 1,200 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and more than 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.
"Everyone understands how that war might have looked, with Hezbollah regiments in the (Israeli region of the) Galilee and an Iranian army opposite the Golan", he told reporters.
