Congress approves measure to ensure federal workers are paid retroactively after shutdown

Trump cancels Davos trip over partial govt. shutdown

That shutdown now holds the record as the longest in United States history.

With the U.S. Senate adjourned until Monday, the current government shutdown, the third since Trump took office, is guaranteed to drag on past Saturday, making it the longest the nation has ever endured.

The time has come for US President Donald Trump to use emergency powers to fund the construction of a wall on the US border with Mexico, Senator Lindsey Graham said in a statement.

An estimated 800,000 federal workers have been impacted by the shutdown, either by having to work without pay while it lasts or by being furloughed.

The President ramped up his efforts this week to make a direct appeal to the American public.

Yesterday during a visit to the southern border in Texas, President Trump put DACA on the table as a negotiating point with Democrats. Graham and other GOP leaders proposed to let congressional committees hammer out details for funding a border barrier while passing a separate bill to end the shutdown, but Trump shot down the plan, Politico reported.

The question of whether the president has the legal authority to build a wall through a national emergency declaration remains an open question and is under review by White House lawyers. On the flip side, Cavuto also thinks Democrats are being disingenuous, sounding less concerned about border dangers than they did just a few months ago.

As for who deserves blame for the shutdown, a Reuters/Ipsos Poll released Tuesday had bad news for the president. The vote was 411-7 and the measure now goes to President Donald Trump for his signature. And the President has dug in in his refusal to sign legislation that does not meet his demand for roughly $5 billion for a border wall, which Democrats refuse to provide.

The impasse between the president and Congress over the funding bill has left hundreds of thousands of federal employees without pay, and a quarter of the federal government closed down.

The bill, unanimously passed by the Senate on Thursday, will ensure that federal workers are paid as soon as possible, once the now-21 day shutdown ends.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC, who had been involved in the effort, told reporters on Thursday, "I just don't see a pathway forward", after several days of talks.

"But the easy route for me would be to call a national emergency and do it", he added.
