Harrington: "I have to find an edge as Ryder Cup captain"

Pádraig Harrington

Padraig Harrington was announced as Europe's captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup on Tuesday, but his United States counterpart remains unknown.

An announcement is expected at a press conference at the European Tour's Wentworth headquarters.

In the least surprising news of 2019 thus far, Padraig Harrington was named captain for the 2020 European Ryder Cup team.

He follows in the footsteps of Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke.

Speaking about his experience at Le Golf National, Harrington said: "You are always learning and it was a nice balanced vice-captaincy with different personalities; some good emotions, some good thinkers".

"Obviously I'm thrilled", said the three-time major victor. You could look at this as a natural progression but it isn't something I take on without a certain amount of trepidation.

"The players want continuity, it makes my job easier that I have their confidence, they've spoken to me publicly and privately".

And it hasn't taken players long to send their congratulations to the six-time appearance maker.

"I have to be a part of that team and ensure that I find an edge to make the team perform to the best of their abilities and get the most out of them and hopefully get a win".

As a player, Harrington made his Ryder Cup debut at the Country Club in Brookline in 1999 and was ever-present for the following five editions, helping Europe to victory in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010. The PGA of America removed much of the rough at Medinah and Hazeltine to suit the American players, and I expect to see more of the same in Wisconsin. He's the guy you want to play. I felt it was the right time for me to go for it.

"I realize it's good timing in my career, but I always realize it's probably the best setting for the team, going to the US having me the captain at this time".

Europe has won nine of the last 12 Ryder Cups.

Harrington won the British Open in 2007 and successfully defended the title the following year, before winning the US PGA Championship just three weeks later.

Padraig Harrington's immediate future has been unveiled to all and sundry.

He said: "Steve's a solid bloke. You just have to know the man behind the scenes".

Like Harrington, Stricker has been a three-time Ryder Cup vice-captain and with Harrington is confident Sticker will be a formidable opponent in 2020. He's tough but very straight.

"You know you've got a game when you're playing against him. But there's no messing from his side".
