Djokovic, Federer On Opposite Sides Of Australian Open Draw

Paul Annacone 'Roger Federer's environment is complex'

World number one Novak Djokovic gave Andy Murray a stinging reality check in the lead-up to next week's Australian Open, dominating the Briton 6-1 4-1 in a practice match at Melbourne Park on Thursday.

One of the standout matchups of the first round sees unseeded Nick Kyrgios' meet 2016 semifinalist and 16th seed Milos Raonic, with the victor of that contest going through to face either 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka or Ernests Gulbis. Stan Wawrinka, the 2014 AO victor, looms as a second-round foe for Kyrgios.

Cilic was drawn into the same section as five-time finalist Andy Murray, who is coming back from a long-term hip injury and is set to open against No. 22-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut.

Aiming for a 21st Grand Slam trophy and a 100th career singles title, Federer will open against Denis Istomin.

"I always have tried to remind myself that this is a dream", Federer said of his longevity at the draw ceremony held at Margaret Court Arena, where he discovered the world number 99 would be his opening opponent.

World number ones Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep were named top seeds today for next week's Australian Open, with 23-time major victor Serena Williams lurking at 16 on the women's side. Murray played at the season-opening Brisbane International last week, where he won his first-round match against James Duckworth but lost in straight sets to Daniil Medvedev in the second, limping between points and admitting he's still dealing with his troublesome right hip.

Serena Williams will face Tatjana Maria in the first round, and could meet either Genie Bouchard or Peng Shaui in the second round.

The three-time grand slam champion then offered a kind gesture by saying: 'If you'd like to come along and watch my match on Monday or Tuesday I'll sort you a ticket'. "I'm just enjoying every minute of it".

The American great, beaten by Naomi Osaka in the 2018 U.S. Open final after a fiery tirade against the chair umpire, faces a tough run to the quarterfinals, with top seed and last year's finalist Simona Halep a possible fourth round encounter.
