National Basketball Association reviewing McCaw's short stay with Cavs

The Warriors Reportedly Requested The NBA Investigate The Cavs Signing And Releasing Patrick McCaw

A person with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday that the league has opened a review at the request of the Golden State Warriors, the team that McCaw had spent the previous two seasons with.

The Cleveland Cavaliers recently offered a two-year, $6 million non-guaranteed contract, which the Golden State Warriors did not match, despite reports that the team would match "any offer" for the young guard. Cleveland released him one week later.

The 6-foot-7 swingman remained a restricted free agent until agreeing to the Cavs' offer sheet. Monday marked the deadline for non-guaranteed deals to become guaranteed, meaning McCaw becomes an unrestricted free agent after he clears waivers.

In his three games with the Cavaliers, McCaw averaged 1.7 points and one rebound per contest.

According to The New York Times' Marc Stein, the National Basketball Association will investigate the situation at Golden State's request.

If the Cavs are found guilty of basically signing McCaw with the implicit agreement to waive him. McCaw's representatives say that is not the case. Cleveland may have found the terms enticing so they could evaluate a young wing player without any risk.

McCaw appeared in just three games with the Cavs and totaled 18 minutes before being waived.

At least four teams are reportedly interested in signing McCaw, while the Cavaliers may also want to bring him back.
