Windows 10 Finally Becomes Most Popular Desktop OS

Windows 10 surpasses Windows 7 to become most popular desktop OS

Microsoft will no doubt be sighing with relief the change finally happened, but there's still a long way to go before it can truly leave Windows 7 behind as a part of its history. In addition to some under the hood changes and improvements, Microsoft is pushing for a password-less sign-on experience for all Windows 10 versions starting with this build.

If you don't already have a password-less phone number account, you can create one in a mobile app like Word on your iOS or Android device to try it out.

And let's be honest, the Windows 10 setup experience itself isn't particularly well designed.

That works by linking your Microsoft account to your phone, then setting up a "password-less phone number account", but the ability to do this was only available to testers running Windows 10 Home. The Insider Build 18309 doesn't bring any radical new features that will blow your mind.

Microsoft has been working on new accessibility tricks for some time now, and Narrator has witnessed a raft of improvements in this build. Instead, you just provide your phone number. Microsoft already confirmed previous year that its Windows 10 OS version has been installed on 700 million devices including PCs, Xbox, tablets and phones.

With the latest build, the voice assistant has been disabled for enterprise users (Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education versions), but Home users will continue to suffer the horror. For now, you'll need to use the command line if you want to see them. Once you've setup your account, you can use Windows Hello Face, Fingerprint, or a PIN (depending on your device capabilities) to sign in to Windows 10.

Also on the ease of access front, Microsoft has added 11 new mouse pointer sizes under Cursor and Pointers settings, to make for 15 choices in total.

The latest edition of Windows, first launched in July 2015, gained an extra 1.08 per cent of market share in December past year according to newest figures from NetApplications. The market share in December 2018 39.22 percent, while the apparently still very popular Windows 7 36.9 percent Martkanteil reserves. Businesses and enterprises will have the option to pay for Extended Security Updates, but OS security updates for Windows 7 will cease for everyone else on January 14, 2020.
