Pelosi invites Trump to deliver State of the Union on January 29

Nancy Pelosi reacts as she is confirmed Speaker of the House during the 116th Congress and swearing-in ceremony on the floor of the US House of Representatives at the US Capitol

House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) addresses the U.S. House of Representatives after being elected as House Speaker at the start of the 116th Congress inside the House Chamber on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., January 3.

The Democrat-controlled US House of Representatives has voted to end a partial government shutdown - but the move looks certain to be vetoed by President Trump.

Pelosi has already outlined a plan for Democrats to pass a legislative package later in the day on Thursday to re-open shuttered parts of the government.

Mr Trump asserted it was essential to keep out illegal immigrants, amid a row over its funding which has led to a partial government shutdown in the US.

Jeffries said that while Trump wants to "waste millions in taxpayer dollars on a medieval border wall", Democrats are drawing "a line in the stand" against the spending they say won't make the border any safer.

Tlaib is the first Palestinian-American women to be elected to Congress, and one of two Muslim women to be sworn in tooffice on Thursday.

The Democratic package to end the shutdown includes a bill to temporarily fund the Department of Homeland Security at current levels through February 8 as bipartisan talks continue.

Democrats also approved a separate measure to fund the departments of Agriculture, Interior, Housing and Urban Development and others closed by the partial shutdown, at levels Senate Republicans had largely agreed to a year ago.

Even if the House should approve articles of impeachment - very unlikely at present - a two-thirds-majority vote to convict Trump in the Republican Senate and remove him from office would seem out of the question barring astonishing new revelations.

The White House has rejected the Democratic package. It passed on a 239-192 vote, with five House Republicans backing it. That cleared the way for a vote expected later in the evening on passage.

After congratulating Pelosi for becoming Speaker of the House, President Trump insisted on the importance of a border wall.

"We have no illusions that our work will be easy", Pelosi said, but she added that "when we disagree we respect each other, and we respect the truth".

"We will seek to reach across the aisle in this Chamber and across the divisions in this great nation", said Pelosi, who previously held the post from 2007-11 when Democrats last had a majority in the House. "Let's not get off on the wrong foot, with House Democrats using their new platform to produce political statements rather than serious solutions".

Trump said his meeting with the union officials had always been planned and just happened to come at "a very opportune time". "We asked the president to support the bills that we support that will open up government", Schumer said.

"What we're asking the Republicans in the Senate to do is to take "yes" for an answer".

President Trump, with (from left) Vice President Pence, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, addresses reporters in the Rose Garden of the White House about the government shutdown on Friday. Republicans now have 199 seats in the 435-member House after the November elections.

According to a Quinnipiac University national poll, 54 percent of American voters oppose building a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border, saying a wall is not necessary to improve border security.

"The fact is a wall is an immorality".

"No, no. Nothing for the wall", Pelosi said in an interview aired on Thursday on NBC's "Today" show.
