Packers should pursue free safety D.J. Swearinger

NFL Carolina Panthers at Washington Redskins

Swearinger was critical of Washington coaching staff following Saturday's 25-16 loss to the Tennessee Titans, questioning the team's game plan and saying he watches more film than the coaches.

Just days after the star safety was shockingly released from the Redskins for questioning the defensive play-calling, Swearinger has been picked up by his old team.

Swearinger revealed Monday on 106.7 The Fan that Gruden called him into his office and informed him of his release. When he didn't do so, Washington decided it had had enough.

"I'm quite disappointed, to be honest with you", Gruden said Sunday on a conference call with reporters. Why would you put us in man to man?

"I don't regret nothing, because I know I gave 100 percent from my heart", Swearinger said during the interview. "I'm a very smart football player".

Teams with worse records will have the right to claim Swearinger before Kansas City and that means a whole lot of teams will have a shot at adding him. Here, against the Texans in Week 11, he races past the "blocking attempt" of tight end Jordan Thomas (No. 83) to sack quarterback Deshaun Watson and force the fumble. It is what many believe had paved the way for Swearinger's exit from Washington which shocked fans and experts alike, considering that he was among the few and most consistent performer on a team that's going nowhere this year. "That's where the frustration comes in at, when we don't win".

If somehow the Chiefs do put a claim in on D.J. Swearinger and he becomes a member of the team for this stretch, fans would have to feel a little bit better about the Chiefs' chances next month. Antoine Bethea has a year left on his contract, but the third safety starter, Tre Boston, is scheduled to become a free agent after the season.
