Some windstorm outages could take days to fix, BC Hydro warns

"Due to the extent of the damage, many customers will be without power throughout the day and for some customers it could be a couple of days".

The powerful windstorm that swept across British Columbia's south coast Thursday is being described by BC Hydro as one of the most severe in many years.

Environment Canada said gusts hit 128 km/h across Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley on Thursday.

Vancouver was in clean-up mode Friday morning after Thursday's wind storm that battered the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley downing trees and powerlines across the region.

Cleanup and fix crews were hard at work across the region Friday morning taking care of the messes left by the powerful storm, which downed trees onto highways, homes and power lines.

Despite BC Hydro crews working around the clock to get things back up and running, over 80,000 customers on the island are still experiencing outages because of the storm.

"Yesterday's windstorm was one of the most severe storms BC Hydro has experienced in years", a post on the utility's website said.

That included a house at 15th Avenue and Yukon Street in Vancouver, where a large tree snapped and fell down onto the roof. Hydro says more than 800 personnel are working to fix widespread damage. Both schools are on the University Endowment Lands, which still had more than 1,700 customers without power as of Friday morning. It's expected to make landfall near central Vancouver Island around noon, then head towards the mainland in the afternoon.

In Nanaimo, officials are urging residents to conserve water as the city continues to fix its water treatment plant, which was also damaged in the storm on Thursday.
