Corbyn in misogyny row over 'stupid woman' remark aimed at Theresa May

Jeremy Corbyn embroiled in misogyny row after appearing to call Theresa May 'stupid woman' during PMQs

"But I think what we are dealing with is a situation. where the Prime Minister has behaved in a reckless and cynical manner by pushing the vote back on her deal, which she knows can not pass Parliament, in an attempt to try to force MPs to back her deal".

When presenter Nick Robinson asked if Mr Corbyn, her longtime ally, was sexist, she laughed and said: "Come on".

He said he was "completely opposed to the use of sexist or misogynist language".

The incident provoked uproar at the end of a fraught and bad-tempered year in British politics in which May's government has repeatedly clashed with Parliament over her Brexit plans.

Mr McCluskey's most significant intervention, however, is his call on the Labour leader to start building a coalition with MPs in other parties on a modified Brexit deal.

Amid hectic scenes, Speaker John Bercow, his voice hoarse from trying to be heard over baying lawmakers, said he couldn't judge the case because he hadn't seen it.

Mr Corbyn was caught on camera muttering something under his breath in reaction to this, which Tory MPs instantly claimed was "stupid woman".

The remark was not picked up on microphones, but politicians from both sides of the House were in little doubt what he said - as were multiple lipreaders.

A video grab from footage broadcast by the UK Parliament's Parliamentary Recording Unit shows Prime Minister Theresa May joking about the opposition Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn's failure to demand a no-confidence vote against her government, in the House of Commons in London on December 19, 2018.

The spokesman said that Mr Corbyn felt MPs were not taking Mrs May's "reckless and cynical" behaviour over Brexit with appropriate seriousness. Similarly, commons leader Andrea Leadsom later highlighted how Bercow himself had failed to apologise to her, after calling her a "stupid woman" during an aside earlier this year.

She said: "It is obvious me that the Prime Minister's tactics are to run down the clock so that it gets to the point that it's either her deal or no deal". Bercow reacted with barely contained anger, wagging his finger at Ford and denying the allegation against him.
