Manchester United appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker boss

The Baby Faced Assassin All You Need to Know About United Boss Solskjaer

Manchester United have hired Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager until the end of the season, bringing the Norwegian back to the club 20 seasons after he scored the winning goal in the Champions League final.

Sunday's 3-1 loss at Anfield leaves the side 19 points behind leaders Liverpool and facing an 11-point gap to the Champions League spots.

"They're nearly writing off this season and next season because if they appoint a new manager in the summer he's not going to have much time to look for new players".

United confirmed the 45-year-old Norwegian's appointment until the end of the season in a statement which said he will be assisted by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, together with Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said: "Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles".

Then the official Manchester United website published an article featuring some of Solskjaer's goals during his time as a player at the club, only to describe him as the new interim manager. "We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.".

However, Solskjaer would return to Molde, where he would re-build his managerial career, and he is now bidding to make an instant impact back at Old Trafford.

Phelan is now sporting director of Australian A-League club Central Coast Mariners, but still lives in the United Kingdom and only heads Down Under a few times a year to oversee their coaching program.

'At the same time, I will follow closely what is happening here at home.

First team coach Erling Moe will take temporary charge of Molde, who finished second in the league last season.
