Penny Marshall, star of 'Laverne & Shirley,' dead at 75

American actress and director Penny Marshall who died at the age of 75 on Monday left behind an extensive film and television legacy including featuring on some of the most popular shows of the 1970s most memorably Laverne & Shirley and 

Her mother Marjorie was a tap school teacher, and little Penny began taking lessons at age 3. "May she Rest in Peace", Robert DeNiro tells ET Canada about Marshall's passing. They eventually starred on spin-off sitcom, Laverne & Shirley which earned them massive acclaim.

"RIP Penny Marshall. You were a light in this world", wrote Justine Siegal, the first female coach in Major League Baseball.

Marshall received the 1991 Women In Film Crystal Award and is featured in the WIF Legacy Series for her work as a proponent of women in film and television.

"Penny Marshall was a sweet woman". Maybe it's because it's just a feel good movie, something that gives many (especially women) a sense of hope and belonging, but A League of Their Own has enjoyed strong staying power for a reason.

Penny Marshall, the Bronx-born producer, director and actor best known for playing Laverne DeFazio on "Laverne & Shirley", has died. "We worked in a brewery". The show became an instant ratings-grabber, running from 1976-83 before its cancellation. And then in 1988, in only her second time out as a feature director, she made Big, starring Tom Hanks. Hanks returned, alongside Geena Davis. It was special. Madonna was perfectly placed as the naughty Mae, Rosie O'Donnell as her smack-talking bestie.

But what they made - what Marshall directed - is one of those films that is powerfully imprinted on a lot of its devotees.

The New York native was also a die-hard fan of the New York Knicks, seen often in the crowd at Madison Square Garden, and a collector of sports memorabilia. She studied acting while supporting herself as a secretary - a role she would later play on "Happy Days".

Marshall's ex-husband, director and actor Rob Reiner, said he was "so sad" to hear the news. I didn't realize she had that kind of understanding of story-telling the way she did. In 2010, it was reported that Marshall had been diagnosed with lung cancer that had metastasized to her brain, but she revealed that she was in remission by 2012.
