The 24-year-old singer and model beat out fellow contestants from 93 other countries to win the honor, succeeding Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa.

It was a night of glitz and glamour in Bangkok, Thailand, where 93 lovely women contested for the Miss Universe crown which was won past year by South African, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

Gray bested South Africa's Tamaryn Green and Venezuela's Sthefany Gutiérrez, who placed first and second runners-up, respectively.

Only newly crowned Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray can answer whether her response to the question pertaining to the legalization of marijuana was influenced by President Duterte's stand on the matter.

Representing India at Miss Universe 2018 is Nehal Chudasama who was crowned Miss Diva 2018.

Gray is known to spontaneously burst into song, which is most likely due to her love of the arts and her Master Certificate in Music Theory.

Gray moved to the Philippines at the age of 18 and used money earned from her modeling career to buy her plane ticket, according to the ABS-CBN.

Poland, Belgium, Great Britain, Hungary and Ireland qualified from the Europe Region while Curacao, Costa Rica, Canada, Puerto Rico and Jamaica made it from the Americas. "As long as I make them proud, I have done my duty", Gray said. Ahead of the show, Miss USA stirred up controversy when she seemed to mock Miss Vietnam and Miss Cambodia for not speaking English but she later apologized.

In a statement, Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo said Gray "showcased the genuine qualities defining a Filipina beauty: confidence, grace, intelligence and strength in the face of tough challenges".

The show was hosted by American television personality, Steve Harvey with support from Supermodel, Ashley Graham, Style Expert, Carson Kressley and Runway Coach, Lu Sierra.

Gray sizzled at the pageant stage as she donned a red crystal-embellished gown during the Miss Universe coronation held at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

"We extend our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to Catriona Gray not only for bringing home the Miss Universe crown but also for giving our country so much pride and recognition", he said.

The contestants spent almost a month in Thailand to compete in preliminary rounds wearing elaborate national costumes, visit famous tourist sites and even met the country's prime minister.

"I always say: having a v***** didn't transform me into a woman".

Miss Australia has won the title of Miss Universe twice, most recently in 2004, when model Jennifer Hawkins copped the top gong.

For the Q&A round of the pageant she was asked: "Let's make believe that all of a sudden you had a million dollars".
