May heads to Netherlands, Germany in bid to save Brexit deal

UK PM May deploys ministers to sell Brexit deal to public

British Prime Minister Theresa May says a change of national leader would result in Britain's departure from the European Union being delayed or stopped, as she vowed to fight to stay in power. May needs to win a simple majority of votes from her party's parliamentarians to keep her job.

Britain's ruling Conservatives have been divided for years over the European Union question, with younger MPs being largely in favour of leaving it, while older ones tended to be more supportive of it. But her authority was seriously undermined by the botched early general election she called past year which, instead of consolidating the Conservatives' hold on power, ended up with Mrs May losing her overall parliamentary majority.

Hunt replaced Johnson as foreign minister in July and has urged the Conservative membership to set aside their differences over Brexit and unite against a common foe: the EU.

Sterling jumped as high as $1.2672 as the result came in but then fell to $1.2605, still up 1 per cent on the day, after it emerged that the number of lawmakers who had voted against May was higher than many in the markets had expected.

In a possible sign May might offer a date for resignation after Brexit, her spokesman said the vote would not be about who leads the party into the next election, due in 2022. This further infuriated MPs on all sides of Parliament, who accused the Prime Minister of holding the chamber in contempt by denying it a vote.

"While there may not be a majority for anything or at least any deal at the moment in the House of Commons, I do believe that there is a majority that the United Kingdom should not be plunged into a no-deal scenario", said Mr Varadkar.

"The government has lost control of events and is in complete disarray", Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said.

"We have little time, but we still have time", the German leader said.

"The size of the vote does matter", said polling expert John Curtice.

"I will contest that vote with everything I have got", she said, adding that removing her will not change anything.

They echoed the prime minister's message that airing their divisions in public would undermine voters' trust in the Tory party - and it would be hard for any new leader to change the course of Brexit before the March 29 date on which Britain is due to leave the EU.

Seeking Concessions May was informed of the challenge late on Tuesday, after returning from a tour of European capitals in an attempt to salvage her Brexit deal.

But in a defiant statement outside 10 Downing St., May said: "A change of leadership in the Conservative Party now will put our country's future at risk".

European Union leaders have often supplemented agreements with political declarations that clarify their interpretation of elements of an accord or provide assurances about how parts of any deal might work.

Graham Brady says the threshold of 48 letters from lawmakers needed to trigger a leadership vote has been reached.

The Conservatives' mechanism for initiating leadership elections is triggered if 15 percent of MPs write a letter to a group called the 1922 Committee, indicating they have no confidence in the leader.

No new vote of confidence can be brought forward for 12 months.

Prospective leadership contenders are former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, home secretary Sajid Javid, and worldwide development secretary Penny Mordaunt. More conciliatory candidates including Home Secretary Sajid Javid and Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd, are also possible contenders. She promised to implement Brexit while keeping close ties to the bloc, to heal a divided nation.
