Trump Nominates Army Chief Milley to Replace Joint Chiefs Chairman Dunford

General Mark Milley would succeed Marine General Joseph Dunford to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

The positions of vice chairman, Army chief of staff now held by Milley, chief of naval operations and the Marine Corps' commandant are all due to be replaced by Trump in 2019. Dunford is expected to serve out his term.

In addition to the scheduled change of the chairman, several other key slots on the Joint Chiefs of Staff are scheduled to open next year.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff serve as the executive branch's top military advisers. While serving as the Commanding General, III Corps and Fort Hood, he deployed as the Commanding General, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command and Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Forces - Afghanistan.

Trump hinted the announcement would be coming earlier Friday when he said he would be making an announcement at the Army-Navy football game he will be attending Saturday in Philadelphia.

In his more than 35 years in the military, Milley has commanded units with the 10th Mountain Division and the 101st Airborne and served multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

President Donald Trump has indicated he will make an announcement at Saturday's Army-Navy game and no one in the Pentagon seems to have the foggiest idea what he is talking about.

Milley also served as a Green Beret, one of the US Army's most elite teams.

Milley made the early decision to charge Bergdahl with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley. Bergdahl was eventually found guilty, reduced in rank to private, dishonorably discharged and fined $10,000, but was spared any additional prison time. "And I look forward to that", Trump told reporters later Saturday, praising Milley after announcing his nomination.

But in choosing the 60-year-old Milley, a graduate of Princeton University known for his combat command experience, Trump went against the wishes of Mattis, who reportedly favoured Air Force General David Goldfein.
