Six of the 2019 nominees for Best New Artist are women, whose presence in the top categories marked a sharp departure from the previous gala, which saw women snubbed in the major prizes.

(Keep in mind that the eligibility period for submissions was October 1, 2017-September 30, 2018.) This year, Cardi B is holding it down in five categories while Kendrick Lamar reigns supreme with eight nominations followed by Drake with seven to his name.

"Shallow" from A STAR IS BORN has been nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Though nominated for album of the year, he was surprisingly shut out of best rap album, where his rival Pusha T earned a nomination.

The "Panther" nomination would give Lamar a chance to win album of the year after losing three times.

The Invasion of Privacy rapper woke up on Friday to a total of five nominations, making her and Lady Gaga the most nominated female artists at the 2019 Grammys.

After that show the academy expanded the four big categories from five nominees to eight, while also creating a diversity task force responding to criticism that the show was consistently too male and too white.

- Best country album: "Unapologetically", Kelsea Ballerini; "Port Saint Joe", Brothers Osborne; "Girl Going Nowhere", Ashley McBryde; "Golden Hour", Kacey Musgraves; "From A Room: Volume 2", Chris Stapleton. The Nanaimo, B.C. singer and Bennett's rendition of 'S Wonderful is up for best pop duo performance, while their Love is Here to Stay is in the running for traditional pop vocal album.

But women will also lead in a variety of categories this year.

- Best pop vocal album: "Camila", Camila Cabello; "Meaning of Life", Kelly Clarkson; "Sweetener", Ariana Grande; "Shawn Mendes", Shawn Mendes; "Beautiful Trauma", Pink; "Reputation", Taylor Swift.

Cardi's nods include Album of the Year, and Record of the Year for "I Like It Like That".

Notably, on 2014 Forest Hills Drive, a Grammy-nominated album, the MC/producer took a swing at the awards for a trend he did not like.

Noah Shebib, another one of Drake's collaborators, is recognized with four nominations for songs from the Scorpion album.

The Grammy Awards are scheduled for February 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on CBS.
