Mitchell Marsh dropped by Australia for series opener against India

Virat Kohli said Australia can be a great place to bat if the batsmen apply themselves well

"I personally don't think any Australian side is vulnerable at home", Kohli said.

Watch News Nation's special show with former Indian player and cricket expert Maninder Singh to get a preview of the India-Australia four match Test series beginning at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

Marsh's place has been taken by middle-order batsman Peter Handscomb - who has been recalled for the first time since the tour of South Africa in March and April - meaning Australia will rely on three seamers.

"Of course, the last time we were here, we had a very close series".

The two cricketers were on their way from a practice season at the Adelaide Oval to the team hotel, which is situated close to the iconic venue which will be hosting the first Test from December 6.

The selectors have confirmed that Marcus Harris will make his debut opening the batting which means Usman Khawaja can drop to number three, while Mitch Marsh has been omitted in favour of Peter Handscomb as their batting order continues to change and has a fragile look to it.

Throw in Australia being without Smith and Warner, and it points to India starting as overwhelming favourites.

"He played well in Australia four years ago but Australia still won the series".

"We obviously have a lot of confidence in Nathan Lyon bowling a lot of overs if we need to", said Paine. Especially in this kind of situation where two of their best batsman have scored literally 50 percent of their runs for Australia are not a part of the playing eleven and they haven't really done well since they have left Test cricket.

"We know he's good enough to be a genuine all-rounder at test level. We've been rolling our sleeves up, we've got plenty to prove as well", Langer said.

"The quicks are going to have a bowl a bit more and we have full faith that (spinner) Nathan Lyon can do the job".

"Travis Head bowls some handy off spinners so we have options there but we'll be backing our bowlers", he said.

"The wicket over the last few years here has given enough throughout the game [to not need an all-rounder]".

"You want to bat on days when it's 40-odd degrees".
