WASHINGTON: America´s national farewell to George H.W. Bush began Monday as the 41st US president embarked from Texas on his final journey to Washington, where his remains will lie in state in the US Capitol rotunda.

The casket carrying the body of George HW Bush is set to arrive in Washington on Monday afternoon, aboard the United States military plane commonly known as Air Force One.

Trump also announced that he'll be sending one of the Boeing 747s that serves as Air Force One to Houston to transport Bush's casket to Washington, D.C.

Masters champion and Houston native Patrick Reed recalled meeting both Bush and his son George W. Bush, remembering them as "amazing people".

The House has canceled all votes for the week and the Senate has postponed votes until after the Wednesday funeral of former President George H.W. Bush.

Mr Trump is expected to sit in a row of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, alongside former presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter for the service.

"We'll be spending three days of mourning and three days of celebrating a really great man's life", Trump said about Bush's funeral while in Argentina this weekend attending the G20 summit.

George W Bush himself seemed to be holding back tears.

The announcement left some wondering about if Charles ever met the late president or if they had a friendship.

George H.W. Bush died on November 30 at the age of 94. Many have also heralded Bush's 73-year marriage to his wife, Barbara Bush, who died months before her husband in April 2018.

Friends and family will pay their final respects at a funeral in Houston on Thursday.

Sully, George H.W. Bush's yellow Labrador service dog, is not done doing his duty for his country.

The Capitol will be open for dignitaries and the public to pay their respects through early Wednesday, with visitors allowed to walk past Bush's casket.

One of Bush's major achievements was assembling the global military coalition that liberated the tiny, oil-rich nation of Kuwait from invading neighbor Iraq in 1991.

His connection with the national pastime continued with George W. Bush's ownership of the Texas Rangers, he and attended Houston Astros games for many years.

They were joined by former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who led the U.S. military during the 1991 Gulf War, as well as USA generals from that campaign against Iraq. He joined the navy when he turned 18.

"We're putting America first". The pair worked together to raise tens of millions of dollars for victims of a 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and of Hurricane Katrina, which swamped New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in 2005.

Bush went to war with Saddam Hussein but spared the tyrant's life and rule, only to see his son and successor throw away the lives of thousands of American soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, squander the sympathy of the world, and enflame the Cradle of Civilization in a vain and vainglorious attempt to finish the job.
