Victor of 2018 Ballon d'Or revealed

Debate about who should win the 2018 Ballon d'Or has largely focused on Kylian Mbappe, Luka Modric, Antoine Griezmann, Mohamed Salah, and how Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are not really in the frame following a 10-year duopoly of the iconic award.

If the leak turns out to be true, Modric, 33, would break the Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi cartel that has dominated the award for the last decade.

As ever, there is strong competition for the Ballon d'Or, with the victor set to be announced on Monday evening.

But why are football's two most famous names not in the running to win the top prize? Ronaldo's total includes an impressive 15 goals en route to Real Madrid's 13th European Cup.

"The award loses value if Messi isn't there", said Vicente del Bosque.

The Barcelona star will not be on the podium and, it seems, is viewed as the fifth-best player in world football.

"It is, at the very least, a little unusual".

The 19-year-old's World Cup performances were key for France - and he has continued to impress for PSG. But having already won FIFA's version of the best male player of the year award, Luka Modric looks set to end this memorable streak tonight. He once again lifted the Champions League trophy with Real Madrid, while he went on to skipper Croatia to their first ever World Cup final, where they just fell short to France.

With five Ballon d'Ors each, their domination began in 2008 with the Portuguese attacker winning as a Manchester United player.
