The White House did not immediately comment on the outcome of the meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires.
Xi urged the two countries to step up coordination in multilateral mechanisms including the G20 and BRICS, and unite all parties concerned in upholding multilateralism, safeguarding the core values and basic rules of the World Trade Organization, supporting trade liberalization and facilitation, and opposing protectionism and unilateralism. The leaders finished their talks after about 2-1/2 hours and Trump departed for his scheduled flight back to Washington.
Along with President Trump, in attendance at the dinner on the US side of the table were Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, National Security Adviser John Bolton, Trump adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and the president's top economic adviser Larry Kudlow. He offered no specifics.
After the meeting, Kudlow said the talks went "very well".
"We'll be discussing trade and I think at some point we are going to end up doing something great for China and great for the United States", Trump said when a small pool of reporters was briefly allowed into the room.
He said: "The relationship is very special".
Xi replied referencing the men's "personal friendship" and that they must cooperate for "world peace and prosperity".
The two presidents also exchanged views on some major worldwide and regional affairs in today's world.
The statement said that Xi, "in a wonderful humanitarian gesture, has agreed to designate fentanyl as a controlled substance, meaning that people selling fentanyl to the United States will be subject to China's maximum penalty under the law".
Officials expressed relief that agreement on the summit communique was reached after negotiators worked through the night to overcome differences over language on climate change.
The economic heavyweight warned that otherwise global growth could slow.
Ahead of what was seen as the most important meeting of US and Chinese leaders in years, both sides said differences remained, and the outcome of the talks were uncertain.
According to Sanders, Xi agreed that China would purchase "a not yet agreed upon, but very substantial, amount of agricultural, energy, industrial, and other product from the United States to reduce the trade imbalance between our two countries".

In an Instagram post, Alicia Keys and husband Swizz Beats posted a video about how they posed for a culture magazine together. Alicia Keys is still a superwoman slaying on red carpet relying only on good moisturizers, eyebrow gel and lipgloss.
