Porsche 911 Carrera S and 4S debut: Pure refined Porsche

2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S and 4S debut: Pure refined Porsche - Autoblog

Porsche is making the 911 more digitally friendly with the next generation.

The eighth generation of Porsche's evergreen 911 sports coupé has been revealed in Los Angeles, 55 years after the first auto to wear the famous designation was introduced. It's got 443 horsepower coming from a turbocharged flat-six 3.0-liter engine delivering an extra 23 hp over the previous model.

Porsche says the forced inductions are now more fuel efficient thanks to improved injection process and a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system. More exciting still is the manual transmission option, which will sit alongside the eight-speed PDK transmission. Improvements include larger turbos, a new intercooler and new injectors. The bulk of the changes, however, are under the bonnet as Porsche has equipped the new model with an even more powerful range of flat-six turbo-petrol engines. It is available to order in the United Kingdom from today, with prices starting at £93,110 for the 911 Carrera S and £98,418 for the 911 Carrera 4S.

According to Porsche, the 911 Carrera S can do 0-60 miles per hour in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 191 miles per hour when equipped with the PDK transmission and the Sport Chrono package. Top speed for the Carrera S is 191mph.

The new 911 doesn't look much different than earlier editions of the vehicle. The wheels - 21-inch at the back, 20-inch at the front - are also designed as a modern take on the famous Fuchs alloys that have graced 911s for decades. At the front, the body is 45 mm wider than the current model.

Carrera S models start from 330kW. Flush integration of the electric door handles that extend outward when needed emphasizes the tapered and smooth side contour. The eighth generation of Zuffenhausen's iconic rear-engined sports vehicle has been thoroughly rejuvenated with a fresh new look, a fettled turbocharged engine and a slew of new technologies. LED headlights are standard, and all versions of the 911 have a "significantly" wider, variable position rear spoiler and a seamless light bar. Apart from the front and rear fascias, the body panels are now entirely made from aluminium. The 2020 model debuted alongside a new app called Porsche 360 Plus; it's created to give Porsche drivers a more immersive experience with the auto. In addition to a central tachometer, the driver looks at two frameless displays, while beneath the large central screen are five buttons for quick access to the most important functions. The central screen now measures 10.9 inches and underneath it there are five buttons providing quick access to vital functions of the vehicle.

The PCM itself has been revamped and features a new online navigation system with crowd-sourced data - the company calls this swarm data - as well as Porsche Connect Plus smartphone connectivity.

"For the upcoming years, our customers will not only race the GT2 RS Clubsport during open track days but also at worldwide motor racing events", said in a statement Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche's president of Motorsport.

August Achleitner, vice president of the Porsche 911 and 718 product lines, detailed some of the trickier parts of developing an all-new take on the world's favourite rear-engined sports auto. This function detects water on the road, preconditions the stability control and anti-lock brake systems accordingly, and warns the driver.
