UNC announces Mack Brown’s return as head football coach

UNC reportedly hiring back Mack Brown

Before taking over at Texas, Brown was the head coach at North Carolina. With 69 wins over those years, he established the second most wins of any UNC coach, Inside Carolina reports.

Once at Texas, Brown coached a Heisman Trophy victor in Ricky Williams, then another Heisman finalist - Vince Young - led the Longhorns to a 13-0 season in 2005 that ended with a win against USC in a Rose Bowl classic for the national title.

Since he left Texas, Brown has entered into broadcasting and is now a college football analyst for ESPN.

Brown will be introduced as the Tar Heels' head football coach at a noon press conference.

If he's able to assemble that kind of staff, it not only could awaken the Tar Heels and their fan base, but also serve as a warning that Brown is serious about trying to threaten the ACC's current dominant power, Clemson, among others.

Brown, who will be 68 by the time next season kicks off, last coached at Texas in 2013, when he was unceremoniously pushed out the door to make room for Nick Saban only for the Longhorns to hire Charlie Strong instead.

And as with his first stint in Chapel Hill, Brown faces significant hurdles as he takes the job.

Following five years away from coaching, the longtime Longhorn coach will return to North Carolina to coach the Tar Heels.

Brown, of course, was famous at Texas for leading the program to nine straight seasons of at least 10 wins from 2001-09, which included two Big 12 championships, two Rose Bowl victories, two national championship game berths and one national title win in 2005. Led UNC to two top-10 final rankings and Texas to seven top-10 final rankings.
