Ex-FBI director Comey to testify before outgoing Congress

James Comey and Loretta Lynch subpoenaed to testify in twilight of House Republican power

The subpoenas, issued Wednesday by Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte, R-Va., the committee's chairman, require Comey and Lynch to appear in closed-door sessions with members of Goodlatte's committee and the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

James Comey departs a closed committee meeting on 08 June 2017.

Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican who is retiring, is requesting private depositions from Comey on December 3 and Lynch on December 4. House Republicans have been probing the FBI's actions leading up to the 2016 presidential election.

Comey confirmed he had received a subpoena from the House Judiciary Committee but said he would resist if made to answer questions behind closed doors.

Lynch hasn't publicly responded to hers. "I'm still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions", Comey wrote in a Thursday tweet.

Fearful that the GOP-led panel could leak damaging excerpts from his testimony, Comey has called for the hearing to be conducted in the open, and his lawyer told Fox News that he will fight for this in court.

Comey tweeted of House Republicans: "I've seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion".

He previously testified in front of a congress about his handling of the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State and declined an invitation by the Committee to speak.

The development comes after the fired FBI chief refused a request in October by the House Judiciary Committee to testify behind closed doors about alleged political bias at the bureau and Justice Department.

With Democrats seizing the majority in the House in the midterm elections - and preparing their own wave of subpoenas against Trump administration officials - House Republicans have a short window to press their case against Comey and Lynch. Democrats say the GOP is hoping to use the issue to derail or discredit special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. "My understanding is that the Republicans have had no contact with either the director or the attorney general since", Nadler said last week.
