Joe Theismann Says He Can't Sleep After Alex Smith Injury

McCoy, in his fifth season with Washington, will start in Smith's place, but the Redskins had no other quarterback on the roster or even on the practice squad.

The injury was eerily similar to the one Joe Theisman experienced 33 years ago when Lawrence Taylor sacked the former Redskins QB.

The Redskins were in the market for a quarterback because Smith went down with a gruesome injury during Washington's 23-21 loss to the Texans on Sunday.

Sanchez, who worked out for Washington earlier Monday along with EJ Manuel and T.J. Yates, beat out his competition to earn the role of backup behind Colt McCoy.

Sanchez, who turned 32 last week, was selected by the Jets with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2009 draft and remained in NY until he was released in 2014.

Sanchez's familiarity with the Washington offense was certainly a factor. Redskins passing game coordinator Kevin O'Connell was a backup quarterback for parts of three seasons with the Jets during Sanchez's time there.

Just in the nick of time to celebrate the sixth anniversary of the world famous Butt Fumble, an National Football League team has given Mark Sanchez a job. Gruden said he hoped to have someone signed by Monday. Washington plays at Dallas on Thanksgiving on Thursday, live on Sky Sports.

Still, Sanchez guided the Jets to the AFC Championship Game following the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Smith was in his first season with the Redskins after arriving in a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs.

For his career, he is a 56.7% passer and he has 86 touchdowns and 86 interceptions.
