Pelosi: 'Every Place I Go' People Say 'Thank You for Saving America'

With rumblings that even more Dems will vote against her for speaker, Pelosi said she's still confident she has the votes to win, though she said there are "certainly" other people in the caucus who could fill the role. Or she could set stricter rules in the caucus, binding Democrats to vote for the party's speaker nominee or try to get commitments from her closest allies that they will support only her for the position.

The subsequent vote for speaker involves all House members.

"And I think to some degree she is", Fudge said.

With Democrats reclaiming the majority after last week's midterm elections, House Republicans will relinquish the gavel, and Pelosi recently said she had "100 percent" confidence in reclaiming it.

House Democrats will first vote for their leader on November 28 in a closed caucus meeting but a formal vote is also taken on the House floor, where Republicans will vote for their own candidate and Democrats theirs.

But Pelosi's detractors are betting that Democrats will want to avoid the possible dysfunction of a knock-down, drag-'em-out speaker's race. She could say she'll serve only for a year as speaker in a transitional role.

House Democrats are widely expected to elect Pelosi as their leader on November 28.

Some of the opposition is coming from newcomers, including congresswoman-elect Mikie Sherrill who said she pledged to voters that she would not support Pelosi.

While the anti-Pelosi group looks satisfied to not present any alternative candidate, satisfied that blocking her would be enough to eventually spur a race, she seemed happy to have Fudge in the race.

She expressed her frustrations on Twitter on Wednesday. "I happen to think that I - at this point, I'm the best person for that".

In a New York Times interview last week, Ocasio-Cortez admitted that since she won't receive a salary until she's inaugurated into Congress in January, she can't afford an apartment in Washington, D.C. yet.

Fudge also says the lack of diversity in Democrat leadership ranks is clear-Pelosi is old and white, and Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the likely new Majority Leader who has been Pelosi's number two, is also old and white. "I just think it's time for a new one".
