Damaged field forces National Football League to change location of Chiefs-Rams game

Rams-Chiefs Mexico City Game At Risk Due To Poor Field

As an added twist, these two squads have always been slated to face off in Mexico City.

Monday night's Chiefs-Rams game is being moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles because of field conditions, the league announced Tuesday.

Clearly, and I'm just spitballing here, the guess is since the Rams were to be playing a "home" game at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, the all mustard combination was geared to be a marketing opportunity for the global audience the National Football League vigorously chases. 'Until very recently, we had no major concerns.

"As a result, we have determined that moving the game is the right decision, and one that we needed to announce now in order to allow our teams and fans to make alternate arrangement".

The Rams (9-1) will host the Chiefs (9-1) at the Coliseum instead.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, some players on both teams are "strongly considering" sitting out the game if it's played at Stadium Azteca.

For this year's game, the fanfest that drew more than 300,000 fans in Chapultepec Park was moved to the Zocalo, the country's main square located in downtown Mexico City, in an attempt to draw even more fans. The 2016 Hall of Fame exhibition in Canton, Ohio, was canceled when the paint hardened and caused concern for players slipping.

Although both the Rams and Chiefs have a Week 12 bye, the league apparently didn't want to postpone the game until the field was considered playable.

Cruz Azul and America are the local teams playing in Azteca. That is, until Tuesday, when rumblings over field conditions at El Azteca Stadium began to grow. The NFL still plays games, in Oakland, on infield dirt during baseball season.

The Rams left Los Angeles on Monday for a week of practice in Colorado Springs, Colo., to help acclimate the players to the altitude they could expect in Mexico City.

The move comes after ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted Tuesday afternoon that several players with the Chiefs and Rams were anxious about the messy surface and considered not playing in the game.
