U.S. Begins Accepting Caravan Migrants In for Asylum Claims

He says most of the migrants he's seen are not military aged men, but women and children. "The trip was so tiring". The groups have also become a refuge for those persecuted due to their sexual orientation.

"We were discriminated against, even in the caravan", Erick Dubon, 23, told the Washington Post.

As of Monday evening, most members of the largest caravan remained more than 1,500 miles from Tijuana in the western city of Guadalajara, according to Mexican officials.

"We'll update you on costs as they become known", Secretary Mattis told reporters on the estimated price of the deployment. "Let them close whatever they want to close, but we are going to get through anyway".

Their arrival time is far ahead of schedule compared to the original caravan, which still could be weeks away.

A caravan of thousands of Central American migrants is speeding its journey to the USA border, breaking up into smaller groups as buses and trucks carry some hundreds of miles in a day while others behind remain stranded.

On Nov. 12, several northbound vehicle lanes at San Ysidro and one lane at Otay Mesa were closed so the USA military could install razor wire and other measures to harden the entry point in preparation for the migrant caravan. They are largely reinforcing existing border fencing with concertina wire.

The splinter group, which reached Tijuana on Tuesday, did so aboard a fleet of buses. They were served breakfast, and then they walked toward the beach looking for a place where the group could stay.

"We've been on the road for more than a month", said Saul Rivera, 40, a migrant from El Salvador.

He said that he meant to wait for thousands more in the caravan to arrive and that he hoped to jump the fence in a large group at the same time, overwhelming Border Patrol agents. "But we will make room".

Rueda said that state and local authorities want Mexico's federal government to petition us authorities to speed up processing of those who present themselves at the ports of entry.

The report also included a statement from the Mexican ambassador to the USA, who said that caravan members were "very violent", noting: "Unfortunately, some of the people in the caravan have been very violent against authority, even though they have offered the possibility of entering in compliance with immigration law and refugee status". For all those who apply for asylum, only a small percentage receive it.

Mr Trump signed a decree that effectively suspended the granting of asylum for those who cross the border illegally, a move that could drastically slow claims at gates of entry. Some 533 migrants had requested a voluntary return to their countries, the government reported. Santiago Alvarez, a police officer on duty outside their rental house, said that people have stopped by "knocking on the door, shouting things, telling them to leave". Few trucks passed, and migrants felt stranded.
