Teams search for bodies in California after wildfire claims 42 lives

California Highway Patrol officers came to the aid of this potbelly pig they rescued in Butte County as the Camp Fire continues to burn

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea's office has identified four of the victims and publicly named three. "If you've been up there, you also know the magnitude of the scene we're dealing with".

The sheriff said he also has requested three portable morgue teams from the United States military, a "disaster mortuary" crew and an unspecified number of cadaver dog units to assist in the search for human remains. "I had an opportunity to go up there and take a look for myself".

The town was ordered to be evacuated last Thursday when the Camp Fire roared through, claiming several lives and leaving the Sierra foothill community almost completely destroyed. As of Monday night, almost half of the evacuation centers in Chico, Oroville and nearby towns were at capacity.

"Last spring they had some good rainfall, which causes a lot of growth, but once the water shuts off, everything dries out again", he continued. But it added that dry conditions and steep terrain will continue to pose a challenge. "It's something I absolutely had to do", said Colusa Police Sgt. Jarrod Hughes, who lost his Paradise home.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said the devastation is so complete in some neighborhoods that "it's very hard to determine whether or not there may be human remains there".

The sheriff said he also has requested three portable morgue teams from the USA military, a "disaster mortuary" crew and an unspecified number of cadaver dog units to assist in the search for human remains.

Because of its proximity to the residential outer fringe of Los Angeles authorities say the Woolsey fire presently threatens an additional 57,000 structures.

"You can see a peek of sun here and there - it's not going to completely block out the sun or anything", National Weather Service meteorologist Sara Pampreen said.

The remains of 13 more victims of the Camp Fire were discovered Monday, bringing the death toll to 42.

Wallingford says Cal Fire expects the map to change.

Cal Fire said more than 3,500 fire personnel were battling the "Woolsey Fire".

Together, the two fires have been blamed for 44 deaths and have consumed more than 200,000 acres of land, as of around midday Tuesday.

As severe as California's future wildfire projections are, the report showed that scientists said the fires are already consistently surpassing projections.

Firefighters used a respite from strong winds on Saturday to drop fire retardants to strengthen firebreaks. The blaze has scorched more than 96,000 acres and was about 47 percent contained as of 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14.

"The president's message attacking California and threatening to withhold aid to the victims of the cataclysmic fires is ill-informed, ill-timed and demeaning to those who are suffering, as well as the men and women on the front lines", Brian K. Rice, president of the California Professional Firefighters, said. This could cause the fire to spread further.

Over the weekend, the "Woolsey Fire" engulfed parts of Thousand Oaks, where a Marine Corps veteran shot dead 12 people in a country music bar on Wednesday.

In its filing on Thursday with the state Public Utilities Commission, it said it had detected an outage on an electrical transmission line.

At the other end of the state, firefighters made progress against a massive blaze that has killed two people in star-studded Malibu and destroyed well over 400 structures in Southern California.

PG&E customer Betsy Ann Cowley told the Daily Mail that she received an email from the power company on November 7, warning her that crews would need to come inspect power lines on her land because "they were having problems with sparks". The first notice came on Thursday, when investigators found the remains of five people in Paradise who were apparently trapped in their cars by the blaze.
