Microsoft Re-Releases Windows 10 October 2018 Update, Outlines Rigorous QC Regimen

Microsoft Re-releasing Windows 10 October Update (1809) Today

Along with the October Update 2019, Microsoft is also re-releasing Windows Server 2019 which was affected by similar bugs.

Then, after everything goes well, Microsoft will start bringing it to users in waves, prioritizing those users with PC configurations that it knows will handle the update well, and gradually trickling down from there.

This is as far as the October 2018 Update got the last time out, before Microsoft hit the pause button. Specifically, Microsoft is slowing down the normal process by which Windows 10 forces users to update to the newest version. Ironically, the rollout of the update has now resumed, almost two weeks into November. For all other Windows OS users, if you'd rather be alerted to new updates when they're available so you can choose when to install them, there's a setting for that in Windows Update.

The update will first be available to media and advanced users who manually check for updates, and after monitoring the rollout for those users, it will become available in phases to the remaining Windows 10 users. Even though the impact of the bug was a fraction of one percent, when you are talking at a scale of 700 million users, the ramifications would be widespread if the update was delivered to everyone.

Windows director of program management for servicing and delivery John Cable outlined in a blog post how the company is working to improve Windows 10's quality. That being said, if you don't see the files right away with Windows Update, you may need to wait as there could be a blocking issue or you may not have won the lottery for being an early adopter of the release. The Redmond tech giant identified and remedied the issue within days but held back on releasing the patched update to a wide audience in order to conduct extensive internal validation and gather feedback from the Windows Insider community. And there's the recent Windows Activation Bug, not to mention.
