Ahead of the official release today, the Night Sight mode leaked via a ported version of Google Camera app. With low-light photography, some of the main challenges involve understanding the light surrounding the images (measured in lux) and second is to understand the number of frames to be captured to compensate for the light or lack thereof.

But starting today, one of those missing additions, Night Sight, is finally rolling out to Pixel 3 owners, and after having the chance to test it out for a few days, I can safely say Google's sophisticated camera feature was worth the wait. But when you actually shoot a picture, it's not a simple click and you're done. Google says the "Night Sight" feature lets you capture stunning low-light photos you wouldn't be able to otherwise. "Night Sight works best on Pixel 3".

When the scene is dark enough, Google will pop up a chip on the screen to suggest that you can take better picture using Night Sight. This process uses more than just a longer exposure time to successfully capture a nice end-product photo. We've been testing it on the Pixel1, 2 and 3 and here's what the final images look like. To set a baseline, I started by taking two shots with the Pixel 3, one with Night Sight off and one with Night Sight on.

Google's Night Sight feature basically merges multiple frames for brighter and details-rich photos. Moreover, Google also shared how Night Sight works which, in a nutshell, works using AI to understand the surroundings at the night and adding light as well as balancing the colours accordingly.

The front camera displayed noise even with Night Sight feature, but the result was better compared to the photo taken in regular mode. However, smartphones have always struggled in scenarios with little or no light and the Night Sight mode aims to address that issue. In a bit of a twist, you can use it in the daytime as well for "denoising and resolution improvements" inherited from another Google Camera feature: Super Res Zoom.
