The students, many young women of color, sat in a circle around Obama, a format she has often used. But now that she is no longer the wife of the sitting president, she is no longer shackled by society's expectations of what it means to be the first lady, not to mention America's first presidential spouse of color. Obama's slogan became famous after her Democratic National Convention speech in 2016 where she addressed the bitter discourse in American politics ahead of the presidential election.

Michelle Obama's new book Becoming is due out November 13, and it's already climbing the Amazon best-seller charts.

"That's a huge weight you have to carry, when your family doesn't want you to go to the next level", she said. "That's also one of the reasons why it's so important that we are courageous about telling our stories: The only way they will know is if we educate them". She recalled how hard she found it to manage Barack's hectic work schedule when he first entered politics and how his long hours away from the family home put pressure on their family.

She then spoke about the need for promoting candidates who are committed to treating fellow candidates respectfully. Realising it, I made my own optic adjustment: "I stopped even trying to smile", she said, referring to Trump's inauguration speech.

"I know too many young couples who struggle and think that somehow there's something wrong with them. And we get help with our marriage when we need it".

During the interview, she also talked about her problems with her husband, Former president, Barack Obama when he kicked off his political campaign.

The interview and Obama's memoir include several other intimate and personal details of Obama's path from Chicago to the White House, including her early relationship with her husband, former President Barack Obama, and the challenges she faced in conceiving her children. "But I also loved it because it's where I could get my hands dirty with kids as we rooted around in the soil". The difference this time was that she was in the building where she spent four formative years of her life, spending hours each day commuting on a CTA bus from the South Side.

"One of the things you learn as a former, it's, like, I don't judge what a current is doing, you know?"

She writes of being left alone to administer hormone shots to help hasten the IVF process.

She also realised over the years that she needed to "take care of herself".

Obama did not enjoy her time in a law firm.
