"It disturbs me to my core", said another senior Fox News employee, who added, "I am so f-ing mad".
And after Hannity spoke with Trump backstage, Bill Shine, the former Fox News president turned White House communications director, offered him a high-five, according to the White House pool report.
"I thought it was very close to complete victory", Trump said, adding that he would "almost have to think about" whether he would have preferred Republicans to retain a slim majority in the House instead of their outright loss.
News organizations are not supposed to endorse candidates, and while Fox is generally considered a right-wing news organization, it always strived to be perceived as more news organization than right-wing.
Monday's rally appearance was not shown on Fox News Channel, but was aired on C-SPAN.
Turner said Hannity has made it "crystal clear" that Trump is "his guy" and that he's willing to "skirt the rules" for the president.
Despite a pre-rally tweet stating he was only interviewing President Trump for Fox and not campaigning with him onstage at the Missouri event, Hannity mounted the stage when the president called him up by name. He pleaded with viewers to vote Republican on Tuesday to support Trump, and his opening monologue echoed a campaign slogan seen on signs overlooking the stage: "Promises made, promises kept".
He recited a list of Trump's achievements after calling his fellow media "fake news" and sparking a backlash from Trump arch-nemesis CNN.
So it's not only that he lied to the employees at Fox. Sean Hannity had tweeted out earlier in the day that he was only going there to do his show. Fox News condemned these actions, issuing a brief statement on November 6. He described them as "livid". "This was an unfortunate distraction and has been addressed", the network said in a statement, without elaborating.
Sean Hannity addressed the controversy in a new Twitter post on Tuesday.
"Mia Love gave me no love and she lost", Trump said. Hannity, who had said earlier on Monday that he would not appear on the campaign stage, tweeted that he was "surprised, yet honoured" by the president's request that he come up on stage. This was NOT planned.
He said later on Twitter he was not referring to Fox News journalists, maintaining that "they do awesome work day in and day out in a fair and balanced way". "They do awesome work day in and day out in a fair and balanced way and it is an honor to work with such great professionals", he posted.
Hannity has for years flouted the usual standards required of Fox News employees. He referred to the other reporters as "fake news".
It was an extraordinary scene after the news network had worked Monday to establish distance between Hannity and the campaign.
While Hannity has been able to get away with breaking normal protocol, the network had previously attempted to rein him in. In 2016, he was part of a Trump political video, which Fox said it had not known about in advance and told Hannity not to do so again.
Hannity was rebuked by Fox in 2010 when it found that the Tea Party had advertised Hannity would be appearing at one of its fundraising rallies, where participants could pay a premium for seats near the set where Hannity was broadcasting his program. The top-rated cable news host has been the president's most vocal defender.
